Phantom Crane Fly

I found the most amazing bug this summer.

Thanks to edupic.net

It floats along on the wind like a bit of fluff. I first saw it harmlessly bouncing along the window pane, and I was immediately fascinated by it's movement.

I would share this bug with you... but alas, due to it's phantom-like nature (really, just it's coloring) it's hard to catch a video of it. The world would be a more wonderful place if everyone could sit down once in a while and meditate on this beautiful creature.

  1. I think you're right! My husband caught a picture of one this weekend and has been telling me about it ever since with increasing delight each time. We have 50 acres of wetlands and it is but one of the daily fascinations -- but one, I'll add, that heretofore I'd not known about. Very cool indeed.

  3. Anon: I don't blame your husband one bit. It's been a year since I wrote this post, but I'm still as excited now about seeing one as I was then.

Jawstaysun: Thanks for sharing these images of the crane fly! Unbelievable.

  4. I had a strange reaction when I spotted a mysterious bug\object float over my head a few days ago. I am a nature lover and photographer as well as researcher and asked for help to identify the photo I took as it was over me. One helpful visitor sent me to your site and indeed I think I now have my answer - thank you.
